One of the most sought after fugitives in the world was taken over after leaving prison, the authorities announced yesterday. José Adolfo Macías Villamar, who goes through the nickname “Fito”, served a 34 -year sentence for drug trafficking when he escaped in early 2024. His escape sparked a period of violence in the Andean country which led to the statement of a state of emergency.

Macías Villamar, 45, was captured in his hometown, the Ecuadorian city of Manta. The Ecuadorian army found it hiding in the basement of a house in a small bunker hidden under the ground. Video sequences have shown the moment of arrest, with a uniform officer aimed at a firearm at the head of the boss of the fugitive gang, which gave his full name.

Above the law

The authorities were impatient to arrest the boss of the crime who seemed to be above the law. During its doors, he ruled the prison, organizing games and organizing rooster combat matches. He even published a video behind the prison walls in which “the Ecuadorian people” addressed, as if he were a kind of political leader, when he was flanked by armed men.

José Adolfo Macías Villamar flanked as a armed police after his arrest.

In reality, he was the head of Los Choneros, one of the most powerful gangs in the equator – with close links with the Mexican cartels. The gang has exploited a large network responsible for the shipment and distribution of multiple quantities of cocaine from South America to Central America and Mexico in the United States and elsewhere.

After Macías Villamar escaped from prison, violence broke out. There were generalized riots, bombings, kidnappings, the assassination of an eminent prosecutor Fernando Villavicencio and an armed attack on a television network during live broadcasting with armed men threatening studio staff with firearms and bombs.

Hunting

Such violence has led the equator to classify Los Choneros as a terrorist organization. Thousands of gang members have been arrested. Interpol issued a mandate for the arrest of Macías Villamar after his prison break. In April, American prosecutors charged it with drug trafficking and weapons. The equator increased the award for its arrest to $ 1 million.

Yesterday, Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa announced that they had finally obtained their man. “More end, we will recover the country,” wrote Noboa on X. “No truce. We have done our part to make Fito extradition in the United States, we are waiting for their response.”
