The prison mafias: criminal axis of the equator

The crime organized in equator operates today on several levels. At the upper levels are drug traffickers who control the transnational traffic activities of the Ecuador cocaine and the corrupt elites in politics, business and state institutions. At the lower bottom are gangs of unhappy young people and common criminals, which operate both in the streets of the country and in its prisons. The most powerful groups in the penitentiary system, known in Ecuador under the name of “Mafias”, is held at the intersection between these levels, connecting and coordinating between them.
